Hair Rollers: Which Ones Can You Sleep In?

Getting a good night’s sleep is important for your overall health and wellbeing. But if you have curly hair, you know that achieving the perfect curls can sometimes mean compromising on a few hours of shut-eye. Luckily, there are now several types of hair rollers that you can use overnight to get beautiful, bouncy curls with minimal effort. But with so many options on the market, it can be hard to know which ones are actually safe to sleep in. Keep reading to learn about the different types of hair rollers and which ones you can safely use overnight.

Foam rollers are one of the safest types of hair rollers to use overnight because they don’t use any kind of heat or chemicals to set your hair. They’re also soft and gentle, so they won’t damage your hair or leave it feeling dry and brittle. To use foam rollers, start by dampening your hair with a leave-in conditioner or setting lotion. Then, divide your hair into sections and roll each section up onto a foam roller. If you have particularly long or thick hair, you may need to use more than one roller per section. Once your hair is rolled up onto the foam rollers, allow it to air dry or lightly blast it with a diffuser if you’re in a hurry. In the morning, simply remove the rollers and finger-comb your curls into place.

Velcro rollers are another safe option for sleeping in because they don’t apply any heat or chemicals to your hair. They’re also easy to use—simply wrap a section of damp hair around the roller and secure it in place with the built-in Velcro strip. Like foam rollers, velcro rollers come in different sizes depending on how tight or loose you want your curls to be. You can also find combo packs that include several small velcro rollers for tighter curls as well as a few larger ones for looser waves. Just be sure to remove the Velcro strip before going to bed so that it doesn’t snag on your pillowcase and pull out your hair while you sleep!

Paper rollers are another great option for sleeping in, although they’re not as common as foam or velcro rollers. Paper rollers work similarly to foam rollers—simply wind a section of damp hair around the roller and allow it to air dry (or diffuse if you’re in a hurry). The paper will absorb moisture from your hair and help set your curl without damaging your strands like heat styling can. However, paper rollers do tend to be a bit more expensive than other types of hair rollers so they may not be the best option if you’re on a budget.
